Project Spotlight

Going green and saving money with server virtualization

The Division of Information Management has been busy the last couple years converting existing servers to virtualization. The work done to date saves the County over $85,000.00 a year in energy costs and will continue to save the County more every year. This project also promotes the policy of environmentally-friendly business practices by reducing the space and energy required for the server center.

Virtualization offers many benefits including easier maintanence, data redundancy, and allowing multiple servers to be hosted on a single physical machine. It also addresses three main costs involved in maintaining servers; energy, cooling, and administrators. When virtual servers can share the same physical machine, it reduces the amount of energy needed to run them. Also, fewer physical machines produce less heat which reduces the amount of cooling necesarry. Finally, the administration of the servers becomes easier with the range of tools available for virtualized servers.

Dane County’s server administrators currently maintain 157 virtual servers. The energy costs related to reducing the number of physical machines to 5 hosts saves the County $85,000.00 a year. As well, the massive air conditioning system that once cooled the server room, is now being replaced with a smaller, more efficient unit. This wouldn’t have been possible a couple years ago when the growing number of servers threatened to overload the air conditioner.

The shift to virtualization and other projects are helping make Dane County a better and greener organization. In the meantime Information Management staff continue to look for better ways to help support and improve the lives of the citizens and staff of Dane County.
